Connor Kurtz is a graduate assistant in the Wildlife Ecology Lab at the University of Dayton studying how how different habitats affect bat activity, species richness, and diversity. He uses acoustic detection to record bat calls at night in a variety of locations, including forests, prairies and solar fields. The Mount Saint John solar prairie is one of his research locations and he has documented four species (eastern red bat, hoary bat, silver haired bat, and big brown bat). His work helps us understand how habitat, humans, and energy projects influence where bats feed and fly, which will help us better protect Ohio's bats.

Connor will begin by sharing about the natural history of bats, threats to their populations, and his research. W'll end with an outdoor foray to see how many bats we can find.

Gather in the MEEC classroom in St. Joseph Hall. Park on the east side of the building or in Lot C. For a map and directions to the property, click here.
